Is RPG Maker Unite worth it?

I know that RPG Maker Unite wasn't well received on launch; however, as someone who's first foray into games development was via RPG Maker 2003 and who has been using Unity for about two years now, the idea of RPG Maker Unite is still very appealing.

It looks like there have been a number of patches to make the engine more responsive and to improve the user experience, but the recent review scores on the Unity Asset Store are still pretty low.

While I do have access to every previous RPG Maker, including MZ, and am very familiar with them, Unite has the unique bonus of being able to export and publish on console (with the corresponding Unity licenses, of course) whereas any games made in MZ can only be published on PC, needing to be ported / remade in another engine in order to be sold on Switch, PlayStation or Xbox.

What are your thoughts? Is it worth it? Should I wait for a sale? Or is it still a case of avoiding it at all costs?

The performance has increased significantly since launch. Here are my personal opinions regarding the low rating on the Unite asset store:

  1. Yes, there were some bugs and performance issues at launch, which isn't really a new thing with maker engines like this and there is no early access on the Unity Asset Store. This was more than an asset, this was a program to make a game (without Unity editor) from start to finish. It will always be a work in progress just like the other maker engines were they were released.
  2. Since this was built inside Unity, users that only used the standalone maker engines didn't understand the 'Unity way of delay'. While yes I agree Unite takes a little longer then it probably should to create a project or import the initial asset, there are other assets that take a long time to import as well. Unity in general is just a slow editor for many things.
  3. Unite lacks the addon creators that MV/MZ had. Those plugins brought new developers into the program and most users end up wanting more than a base maker engine can offer. This will only be fixed with time and experienced Unity devs getting more involved.

Here is a cool project a user has made with Unite: https://ponapp.itch.io/huxla-jrpg-dungeon-kitan

Since you are already a Unity developer you may be in a position to tweak Unite to your needs and get the benefits of a typical maker database and project structure.
